Data Privacy Day
Jan 28, 2021
According to a recent survey by Pews Research Center, 7 in 10 Americans feel their personal data is less secure than it was 5 years ago. Just think about everything we do online - from banking transactions to posting family photos, we share data on our devices more than ever before. Our always-connected lives require that we understand tactics that each of us can use to learn how data is collected, used and shared. That is why the theme of Data Privacy Day 2021 is “Own Your Privacy.”
Maspeth Federal Savings encourages you to be mindful of what you share online and practice the following safety tips to improve your privacy online.
Tips to Help Protect Your Privacy
- Check your social media privacy settings. You’d be surprised how much information those networks collect about you. We recommend updating your settings to reflect the information you’re comfortable sharing.
- Share with care. Oversharing is not limited to posting on social media. Avoid storing your private data on online services that are meant for sharing such as Google Drive and Dropbox.
- Browse privately. Enable private browsing mode on your devices. This ensures that the pages you visit, your search history and your AutoFill information are not saved after you close a tab.
- Review permissions for browser extensions and apps. Every mobile app will prompt you to give permission to use the camera, access contacts, locations and more. The same goes for browser extensions. Carefully check the permissions you give them.
- Use secure passwords. We highly recommend using long (12 characters and more) passwords for each service and device you use.
