Maspeth Federal Savings continues its long-standing support of Middle Village’s Relay For Life. The sustainability of this is anchored in the commitment of its leadership and the dedication of its employees.

One of the most beloved employee volunteer initiatives, The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is not just a charity walk for Maspeth Federal Savings; it is a solemn dedication to one of its own. In 2004, Bruce Sapienza, a Maspeth Federal Savings employee, brought the initiative to the bank’s Volunteer and Charitable Giving Program at a time when Middle Village area was first beginning to participate. Sadly, Bruce died of cancer in 2007. Following his passing, maintaining this program became a permanent priority for the bank. Bruce’s daughter, Kristen Sapienza, also a Maspeth Federal employee, took up the banner as the bank’s representative during her 13-year tenure. This year, Kristen passed the torch to Paul Egan, who has injected new creativity into our efforts by organizing pre-event fundraisers and focusing on rallying employee-led teams.

The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s annual volunteer-led charity walk that celebrates survivors, honors caregivers, remembers loved ones lost, and raises funds to ensure that everyone has the chance to prevent, detect, treat and survive cancer. As the largest private, nonprofit funder of cancer research in the U.S., the American Cancer Society bridges the gap between scientific research, direct patient care and legislative advocacy.
